Comments from the USA fans at the games:

USA Game #1: Argentina 9, USA 1

USA played well through the game and had periods of excellent offensive and defensive play, particularly short corners where good play stopped Argentina's efforts there. The USA scored one good goal at the end of the game, to the delight of the crowd who cheered loudly in support. It was a very fast game, with the USA playing hard, with Argentina's advantage in team skills and experience (ranked #7 in the world) overcoming the Americans.

USA Game #2: France 7, USA 4

This was an evenly matched game, played with enthusiasm. Both teams played this match to win, with the USA pulling out to a 2-0 lead - stunning the French. France responded and pulled up to 2-2 after much work. The USA then went to 3-2, and France responded. The USA pulled to 4-3, and then France tied. Then late in the game France scored 3 unanswerd goals. The crowd and many locals in New Zealand were pulling for the USA and cheered the USA team loudly throughout. Although the USA team almost pulled off an upset, they definitely showed they could play the 16th world ranked French team.

USA Game #3: New Zealand 4, USA 0

In a very intense and exciting game, the USA played the Black Sticks of New Zealand (New Zealand's national team) from start to finish with courage and enthusiasm. NZ was surprised by the intensity of the USA defense and determination. In a game matching the 10th ranked team in the world against the underdog Americans, the USA played really well. Jeb Saez (dubbed "mountain man" by the New Zealand Herald), had many great saves often blocking multiple shots on goal. The USA frustrated the world-class Black Sticks with lots of movement of the ball to mid-field and into the NZ end as often as they could. Both teams celebrated when it was over with the Black Sticks and the USA both taking a victory lap around the field. New Zealand, for winning their third game and getting closer to a berth at Beijing. The Americans, for having palyed a very high level, intense game well. The fans, from all countries, cheered both teams wildly in appreciation for a really great game.

Some photos are shown in the Photo Archive.

Here in New Zealand, the Tournment is covered in the New Zealand Herald newspaper with full colored pictures, with Hockey News half-page and full page write-ups every day. Particularly since the New Zealand "Black Sticks" Mens National Team are New Zealand's finest. Some games are televised live on New Zealand Television, in primetime.

The opening ceremony had native Maori dancers and music and other ceremonies to celebrate the opening of the tournament. To date, the tournament has a wonderful atmostphere.

We had a very successful visit to this year's National Hockey Festival in Indio/Palm Springs. We captured our pool championship, but it was close as we had to go the fourth tie-breaker, goal differential, to claim the championship. We tied our team record for goals against with 3, and had the second-highest number of goals, 15, in team history. You can read more at http://www.usfieldhockey.com/festival/results07/U19N_web.htm
Our goals are to have fun and to win. We accomplished both. We had great team meals, including Thanksgiving. Special thanks to our team mom, Pat McPherson, for all her hard work in taking care of all the details of our trip. And thanks to Steve Cruise for our team dinner on Friday evening.
