U19 Camarillo Cougars girls team participate in National Field Hockey Festival Tournament

Over Thanksgiving weekend, the U19 Camarillo Cougars girls team participated in the National Field Hockey Festival Tournament. They had a young team, with most of the girls only fifteen or sixteen years old. They lost five games and tied one but they kept their spirits up the entire time and didn’t get discouraged. Goalkeeper Isabel Jardine ( Thousand Oaks ) stopped both penalty flicks against the Cougars. The girls nearly upset the second place team by tying up the game 2-2 during the first half. Forward Tory Berry (Moorpark) scored a beautiful drag flick goal during a penalty corner and midfielder Sophia San Angelo ( Azusa ) put another one in after a breakaway. But they couldn’t recover after Team Gateway Midwest put in another goal in the second half.  

The girls had a great time despite the scores. Katy McAlonley ( Glendora ) had a graceful somersault that impressed everyone (she kept her stick in her hand!), the girls made a human pyramid after the last game on Friday, all of the parents’ car windows were covered in “Go Cougars” sayings, and there were eventful team dinners every night.

We would like to thank the Glendora girls (Sophia, Katy, and Lauren) for joining our team for the tournament. We hope you will be able to continue playing with us in future tournaments and leagues. We would also like to thank Sarah Perkins for taking the time to coach us on weekends. We have learned so much from you, especially positivism. That is what helped keep our chins up during the entire tournament.  Most of all, we would like to thank Gohar Harutyunyan for coming to coach us at Festival, despite being sick! We appreciate all you went through and we are grateful for the skills and words of wisedom that you have given us that will guide us throughout our hockey careers.
